The Rapid Development of Trademark Registration in Middle China

According to Henan Daily, data released by the Administration of Industry and Commerce in Henan, a province in middle China, shows that the amount of trademark registration has been rapidly increasing and the conscious awareness on trademarks have been enhancing also, though it still falls behind the more developed areas. Henan is located in middle China, the province with the second largest population in the country, having residents of more than 9.3 million at the end of 2007.

By June, 2011,118,000 trademarks had been effectively registered in Henan, up from 58,000 by the end of 2007.

The well-known trademark established and protected by State Administration of Industry and Commerce (SAIC) in the province was 72, up 2 times compared with 28 by the end of 2007.

And 20 Chinese geographical indications had been identified and protected by SAIC, up one time from 9 by the end of 2007.

Also, the number of identified and protected famous local trademark was 1,307, doubling that 627 by the end of 2007.

Even so, the data indicates that Henan is stillbehindof the more prosperous regions in China.

On the registration amount, there are around 2.39 million enterprises in Henan, including privately or individually-owned business, with few have trademarks, moreover, the registered trademarks consist of less than 5% of the total, whereas the rate is 20% in developed areas in China.

As to the established China well-known trademark, the amount in developed provinces like Zhejiang and Jiangsu are both more than 300, and 200 more in Shandong and Fujian, even in middle region, Henan only ranks third after Hunan and Hebei Province.

As a large and monstly agricultural province, Henan owns rich agriculture products and geographical indication recourses; however, the amount of registration indicating such doesn’t match. By the end of 2010, the registered indication nationwide was 1,004, including 127 romf Zhejiang, 107 from Shandong and 80 from Fujian, respectively 6, 5 and 4 times those registered in Henan.

Now, the local regulation of Opinions on Further Implementation of Trademark Development Strategy to Promote the Middle Economic Zone Construction is being drafted by the provincial government in Henan, for purpose of both trademark and economic development.
